The Formula One of Triathlons attracted Celebrities – and international TV Stations

It was an exciting race for all participants. The first TriStar111 in Monaco and the third over this distance attracted 628 individual athletes and 43 Relay Teams. TV Stations from Germany, great Britain, France, Spain and Austria will cover the event with Triathlon stars and Formula One pilots. Olivier Marceau (SUI) and Christel Robin (FRA) are the winners of the race. The best relay team was the a team racing to raise awareness for Livestrong’s fight against cancer composed of Grégory Mallet (swim), Geoffroy Lequatre (bike) and Marcel Zamora (run).

1km of swimming, 100km of cycling, and 10km of running are the unique TriStar distances adding up to 111km of Triathlon fun! This was the total distance that had to be mastered at today’s TriStar111 Monaco featuring a cycling course covering a total climbing altitude of more than 2000 meters and a 2,5 lap run on the world famous Formula 1 circuit in the Principality of Monaco. Shortly before 8:00 the Mediterranean was calm when the 628 individual athletes rushed into the waters offshore Larvotto beach. It was Olivier Marceau who came out of the water first in 12:10 minutes – only four seconds ahead of Hervé Banti from Monaco. Chris McCormack (AUS) and Romain Cadière (FRA) were the first to follow to the transition area. Christel Robin was the first of the female professionals to touch solid ground (14:41), leaving Sara Tavecchio (ITA) and Charlotte Loaring (CAN) behind.

While the first individuals already finished swimming, the Team Relay Challenge start gun went off at 8:15. Gregory Mallet running in the Livestrong Team No. 2 (12:13) was the first out of the water and handing over his timing chip to his team’s cyclist, Geoffroy Lequatre from the Radioshack Team. 1min30 behind, Fred Sultana from the Livestrong team No. 3 came out of the water. On the third place after the swim course: Paul Lanat (ACF Tri Team), one minute and 46 seconds down.

The bike course from the Larvotto area –2km through the Principality of Monaco in the direction of Roquebrune Cap-Martin, then to the hinterland on French territory, is a very demanding one. Climbs alternate with very technical downhill sections. Olivier Marceau was leading on the bike for the whole race and managed to increase the advantage on the chase group to 2 minutes and 29 seconds. The second athlete in the bike park to change for the run was Mikel Elgezabel of Spain. Third was Regis Maniora (LUX), 6:16 minutes down.

On the women’s side Christel Robin made a sovereign race. She virtually ran away of the remaining female field and finished impressive 17 minutes and 18 seconds before Coralie Lemaire (BEL) and Annika Segg from Germany. Livestrong Team No. 2 with Geoffroy Lequatre on the bike could keep the lead.

The Mirabeau hairpin bends, the Rascasse and the Tunnel Louis II are the key locations of the Formula 1 Grand Prix circuit in Monaco. On the 2 and a half loops run participants had the opportunity to experience how steep the climbs and the descents are on the track. Olivier Marceau kept his lead throughout the whole course and finished in 3:44:51. The chasers Mikel Elgezabal and Regis Maniora crossed the finish line in 3:47:38 and 3:53:56 respectively.

The cycling course and Bruno Senna were meant for each other. He overtook Alexander Wurz around kilometre 80. Just one minute and eight seconds behind came the second team of Formula One pilots: Lucas di Grassi (20. rank) and Bruno Senna, who had a blast at their “weekend off” before racing Monza next weekend.

Just one day to go! The favourites of the TriStar111 Monaco gathered at todays press conference at 10 o’clock and shared their feelings and thoughts.

More than 660 individuals and 40 relay teams are registrated for the big race tomorrow. Only few of them have real chances for victory. In one point all of the professional athletes agreed. The TriStar111 Monaco is going to be a tough competition. The condition of each athlete will decide about victory or defeat over the 1km SWIM, 100km CYCLING and 10km RUN.

17 male and 4 female professional athletes are going to be at the starting line on Sunday at 8:00. Top favourite and Winner of the 1st TriStar111 in Germany Chris McCormack (AUS) about the course: “It’s a difficult distance. On the page it looks easy but the cycling course is hard, because you can’t give up any ground.” About his expactions for the race: “I am a lot fitter than a few weeks ago, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow.” He even has some advise for his rivals: “The swim is over before you know it and the bike distance is very aggressive. So, if you want to win, be aggressive from the start.”
